Home again

After two weeks of traveling in the Philippines and Indonesia, I got home safely on Friday night. I couldn't resist creeping into Griffin's room and waking him up, just for a little cuddle. Frankly the homecoming I'd expected didn't materialize, as the poor guy was not pleased that I'd woken him up from a deep sleep just to say hello, even if it was his mommy. The next morning when I went in I also expected some sort of tremendously fantastic greeting, but he was just kind of like, oh hi mommy, where's my milk? I guess that's a good sign of a resilient kid, who is just as close with his daddy as he is with me. As for Steve, I'm wildly proud of him for running the daddy show all alone for two weeks, and barely sweating it. Or at least that's what he made me (and my family and his family, who called continuously while I was gone, which I appreciated!) think. But I really didn't leave any notes or instructions or anything- I pretty much just packed up and walked out, with a few verbal reminders, and that was it! So I think my husband is pretty fabulous no matter what, for taking care of the house, the dogs and of course Griffin, all on his own for that long.

While I was gone, we did get to skype video chat a few times, and it was fun to see Griffin and have him blow kisses to me! Steve only sent me a few photos- the last three I got while in transit on the way home- but here they are! All in all I hope I don't have to travel a large amount with this job, but I learned that I can handle it just fine, as can Steve and Griffin. I was reminded how much I enjoy my work once I got there and got settled (field trips are the best part!), and I like to think that my traveling from time to time will help Griffin grow up a bit more balanced and independent, my husband to get a slice of what its like to be the mommy (not that husbands can ever really get it fully though), and me to get to just be me for a short while...though of course I showed all the field staff tons of pictures and videos and probably talked about Griffin more than a professional woman on a business trip should- because no matter what, I'm definitely a mom now!
