This trip I'm in Jaipur, India and will then continue on to Nepal. It's been a pretty stressful trip, working very long hours and weekends. But we took a break on Sunday for a few hours and visited the famous Amber Fort in Jaipur. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site. I've been to Jaipur before, about 10 years ago, but was having trouble remembering that part of the trip. As soon as we arrived at the Fort it all came rushing back. It was a cold, foggy day but later on you can see the sun came out and the fog lifted. I was surprised how cold it was, probably in the 40'sF. This time, my colleague Nicole wanted to ride an elephant up to the entrance so I figured hey, you only live once! Living in Asia for many years I've spent plenty of time up close and personal with elephants, but realized I'd never ridden one, at least that I could remember. Camels yes, but I don't think an elephant! Here are some pictures of this amazing place. One thing to keep in mind? It actually was used as a palace, and was first built almost a thousand years ago. The main structure, built out as you see now, is about 400 years old. Incredible to see such an amazing feat of architecture!
Here's the fort in the fog in the background.
Note the sign: love it.
My colleagues Omar and Geoffrey who also decided to use elephant transport!
Look carefully to see the elephant carved into the sconce. Ganesh has a heavy presence here.
A bunch of hawker guys were taking photos and then had them printed at the end for you to buy. So we bought one. :)
